In 2015, the Milwaukee Business Journal honored Dr. Ford with its Women of Influence Award.  Prior to joining UW-Parkside, Dr. Ford served as Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of West Florida, and Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Spalding University (Kentucky). Dr. Ford holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Louisville.

讲座提纲:

The 8th World Women University Presidents Forum inspires us to reflect on the past, live in the present, and plan for the future as we lead for sustainability in our global society.  Through dialogue we will build relationships, through relationships we will build trust, and with trust we will create meaningful solutions to embrace the leadership opportunities of today and tomorrow.   Leading a university community is filled with opportunities, challenges, joys, new experiences, relationships, learning, and a few wrong turns in decision making.  As we consider our roles to lead colleges and universities into the future, take time to consider what is on the horizon for our work as women leaders using the definition of horizon as the limit of a person’s mental perception.

What are the internal and external forces impacting our institutions of higher education?  How will women leaders disrupt the status quo and lead with purpose; no more waiting for someone else to solve the issues?  What can we learn from the women presidents who preceded us and paved the paths of opportunity?  What model of leadership will guide us as we advance change towards as sustainable world?

Co-researchers, Deborah Ford and Chris Cavanaugh, conducted a study to listen, reflect, and dig deeper into the experiences of women presidents and chancellors in the United States to understand how they impacted their campuses. The researchers planned and hosted a Legacy Conference with Women Presidents to advance the work of Leland and Astin’s seminal work, Women of Influence, Women of Vision.  The research team conducted interviews with retired presidents and completed a survey of current presidents from across higher education in the United States.  The opportunity to glean the discernment process, personal meanings, and how women presidents viewed their impact, joy, and legacy provided much deeper insights into the leadership characteristics and behaviors.  Despite significant differences in background and types of institutions, many common themes emerged that informed the development of a new model of leadership as well as how best to ensure that an adequate talent pipeline is created and nurtured.  Based on the results of the Legacy Conference, interviews and additional survey research conducted, the researchers are developing a more comprehensive framework to guide women leaders.  The proposed overarching model includes five major elements or themes: (1) awareness of the barriers and challenges and best practices, (2) setting a vision that includes both short-term focus and longer-term transformation, (3) being intentional, (4) focusing on impact and results, and (5) celebrating the joy of leadership.

The presentation will begin by setting context of the major disruptors impacting higher education followed by a discussion of Women of Influence, Women of Vision: reflections over 30 years and close with an introduction of a new model for women leaders to advance change towards a sustainable world.
